KPIs for Quantified Self:: What to measure?
A huge part of what I think is really important about measurement and quantified self, is finding what to measure.
I always remember in my days managing helpdesks, I was interviewing some staff from Telecom (a competing ISP), and I had asked about the culture and quality metrics that they had used when the applicant had worked there.
Apparently they measured 183 rules for each call.
I asked how many were around “Did you solve the customer’s problem?”
Big pause… ah… that is a really good point! I don’t think there were any?
Blew my mind.
So what I have done is break my jobs into sections / modes and types of tasks. From that I have put together what I think are the best measurements I could come up with. Do feel free to debate / sugggets better measures!
What I want is a:
- A multi test, timebased data recording of the following metrics
Emotional State (what current emotion) - Cognitive Function (How smart, alert, non fatigued etc)
- Bio signs (HR, Breathing etc)
- Energy levels (How energy / vitality do you have)
I then want to compare these results to everyday tasks “Work“
- Sales / sales results
- Emails
- Programming quality
- Design
HOW TO MEASURE PRODUCTIVITY IN SALES
- Calls / hour
- Yield / calls / bookings made (aka close ratio) / hour
- Maybe’s / call me back later ratio also.
- Maybe the ratio of times the sales rep uses pistol fingers during a sale.
HOW TO MEASURE PRODUCTIVITY WITH EMAILS / REPORTS
- Keystrokes per minute
- Emails / minute / hour
- % of emails not resulting in a reply (? is this even accurate).
- Reading level of the text?
- NLP emotional level of text
- Have written keystroke recorder.
- Mousetracking movement / accuracy?
MEASURING PROGRAMMING / CODE QUALITY
- Fricken hard to measure this quantitatively
- Lines / hour (about the worst measure, but an almost proxy for quantity).
- Code quality by peer review (probably a better way to measure)
- Code quality by self review (eg “How did you feel you coded today?“)
- Self review weeks later (on Gitcheckin)
MEASURING DESIGN and LOGO QUALITY
- Self review
- Design friends review
- http://ratemysite.com/
- Client customer satisfaction of logo / design
- Survey monkey for all work + multi variable regression

What is interesting is that there are many different measurements (some easy, some hard), but also what I have found is that the ways to work, eg thought patterns, energy levels, level of “hype”, level of focus etc all vary wildly from task to task, so this emotional moding (made up word) of task, means that I am able to get into the right emotional state, in order to achieve the best performance.
